When washing goes bad.

50 shades of greyness

Aug 24, 2022 | Washer, Advice

We've all had it happen. You take your beautiful new white garment out of the wash, and its colour has more in common with a patchy lump of rock than the clean snow that went in.

Much like a fine woman (or man!), you have to treat your white garments right in order to keep them around. But it can be difficult to know exactly how you should manage them. Luckily we've got one simple trick to help keep your whites around for ages.

Grey rocks

Don't skimp on rinsing!

One of the most common reasons that your whites turn grey is a lack of proper rinsing. As garments are agitated in the wash they are soaking up chemicals to help clean the soils within. These chemicals will turn grey as they become more saturated with dirt and grit, so if you fail to rinse them thoroughly there is a risk that the chemicals will stay on the garment. This causes the garment to slowly turn greyer and greyer over time until it looks nothing like it originally did. So how do you avoid this?

Fresh loaf of bread

It's like a recipe:

Everything within the wash cycle needs to be in balance for your garments to be washed correctly. You don't want to over, or under salt your bread!

This may sound complicated, but we promise it isn't! Just like a recipe, there are professionals who can help you figure out the exact quantities and times for your 'ingredients' so you can get a perfect result, every time.

Your chemical supplier can advise the recommended dosage per kilo of washing. As a rough example, it could be approximately 5 ml per kilo but does depend on the type of chemical and garments being washed.

Your chemical supplier is also likely to recommend wash, rinse and spin speed requirements, mostly to ensure you get all of the chemicals through and then out of the garments. Similar to the dosage, these will vary depending on the type of chemicals and garments, so we recommend asking your supplier for advice.

Just remember; washing whites is exactly like a recipe. If you skimp, there will be a price to pay.

We'll work with your chemical supplier.

Our distributors work with all chemical suppliers and can assist with different levels of programming assistance if need be.  They can provide relevant documentation and provide assistance to help your chemical supplier determine the best option for your needs.
