How is your laundry system designed?

When thinking about commercial laundry, its easy for people to focus on what they see as the 'big issues.' For a laundromat, this may mean the site location, but more generally it includes the types of machines needed, based on load capacity and efficiency. What is just as important, but not often initially considered, is the physical design of your laundry space.

A deliberate system.

The key to a successful laundry system is being deliberate. Ensure that the space is designed to suit your needs. A complete and deliberate design will eliminate the risk of getting something wrong, and having to spend valuable time and money fixing the mistake. A thorough design will cover the big issues. This includes power, water and gas supply, along with adequate ventilation. These factors will influence where you can and can't install machines, which will have a knock-on effect into other areas of the design.

The second part of a deliberate design focuses on HOW the space will be used. First, what the space is being used for must be considered. A laundromat will have different needs to a hospital! There are some common threads between functions, all sites will need to ensure there is adequate space to move around in, but 'adequate space' will change depending on the industry. A laundromat should be designed to be inviting, whereas a hospitality laundry room needs to prioritise being efficient!

The design will also factor in specialist equipment such as barrier washers, which limit the risk of cross-contamination from dirty to clean laundry. If barrier washers are not feasible, then laundry room design can still minimize this risk, as less opportunities for cross-contamination are present.
