A new look for an old laundromat

Nov 11, 2021 | Life, Community, laundromat

Laundromats are an essential part of many peoples lives but too often they are a little bland or boring. Never ours of course, we provide a design service to ensure our new builds are bright and pleasing!

But an artist in London took this idea to a whole new level.

Recently, artist Yinka Ilori partnered with Lego and some local children in East London to challenge the idea that laundromats are mundane and boring. He created a 'Launderette of dreams' which combines the layout of a traditional laundromat with a children's playground.

Ilori dramatically altered the laundromat from a dull, simple place to a vibrant and interesting space. This art installation includes over 200,000 Lego bricks which are used as both toys and as part of the structure. The exhibit encourages the idea that laundromats are a place for community, play, and shared experience, rather than just washing your clothes. His design includes traditional play spaces such as hopscotch floors, as well as a unique Lego mural wall for visitors to interact with.

Unfortunately, it isn't a working laundromat - it's an art exhibition.

This idea stems from Ilori's own experience as a child. He had strong memories of playing at his local laundromat while waiting for his parents to finish their laundry. He states; "We often forget about the mundane spaces which play an important role in bringing the community and people from different cultures and backgrounds together, as well as providing an opportunity for kids to meet, play and share ideas."

Why should you care?

In short, we understand the impact on a community that a laundromat has. We aren't suggesting that every laundromat renovates with bright primary colours with a slide or monkey bars, but there may be potential to enhance your customer experience. The more pleasant a laundromat is, the more traffic and usage it will get from new customers from a wider area. Sometimes this can be done simply and cheaply with better seating options, another folding table or improved air-conditioning.  Or it could  include renovations like Ilori's project!
